SIR: The article headed “Buses on Andover Road questioned” (Chronicle, January 27) issue overlooks another important consequence of the proposed closure of Andover Road North, or indeed of leaving it open for buses only.

Either of those options would surely encourage drivers heading towards the city centre to take the parallel route down Priors Dean Road and Bereweeke Avenue and down to the crossroads with Stoney Lane.

There are already collisions at that crossroads several times a year, most recently one that required the attendance of two ambulances as well as the police. It must surely be likely that closing Andover Road North or restricting it to buses will lead to fatalities at that crossroads, and to the highways authority then having to take out compulsory purchase orders on the three houses adjacent to the junction and build a roundabout with traffic lights.

Some joined-up thinking on this issue is urgently needed.
