THE future of the former Debenhams department store on Winchester High Street is uncertain.
It closed last year as the national chain finally collapsed after ailing for years.
The building is owned by an offshoot company of Surrey County Council and it has been in discussions with numerous interested parties. Travelodge is said to be interested in expanding its present hotel although the company has not responded for Chronicle requests for clarification.
One thing that Belgarum needs to highlight is the future of the facade. The intricate glass and metalwork dates from when the store was owned by Sherriff and Ward and looks to be pre-World War Two.
Whatever the future holds the shopfront should be protected. Many modern-day stores want to sweep away the past in the name of their brand but in a city like Winchester with scores of historic shopfronts such things should be resisted, thinks Belgarum.
