I am one of the volunteer gardeners who look after King John’s Garden in Romsey and wished to respond to your article of last week which we appreciated.

Many locals and visitors tell us how much they appreciate the garden as a peaceful green space in the centre of town and we are sure that they would be disappointed if they were aware that the garden was to be overshadowed by a 2-storey house less than 5m from the boundary fence.

I thought it might be useful to point out that 27 years ago the garden was originally designed and is maintained predominantly as a medieval garden with plants that would have been found in UK gardens pre-1700. There is then a later extension along the side of King John’s House that was designed as a Victorian garden. Maintaining the heritage status of the garden necessitates constant research into the plants that were grown pre- 1700 and contacting UK-wide nurseries for appropriate plants.

I believe that King John’s Garden is a special place and that Romsey is fortunate to have such an asset in the centre of the town which should be protected for future generations.
