KINGS Worthy Girlguiding was visited by the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, Professor Joy Carter, last week to thank them for all the work they had done in lockdown to raise spirits.

In her address to the Guides the Deputy Lord Lieutenant explained how she herself had been a recipient of a random act of kindness when she returned home one day to find a pot of daffodils on her doorstep. She reflected how overwhelmed she had been by this act and had been sent to pass on thanks to Girlguiding in the Worthies.

Guide Hannah Pye, 11, who spent some time talking to Prof Carter said: “It was great to hear how she has had a meal with the Queen and that she thought the Queen had a great sense of humour!”

During the lockdowns Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers across Kings Worthy completed various challenges set by their leaders to raise spirits in the community - ranging from pots of bulbs, Christmas cards to residential homes, drawings to a local bus company and more recently sprucing up Winchester Prison garden.

Leader Isabelle Haigh stated: “Being an active part of our community and spreading Girlguiding cheer is an important element of our programme. We are really proud how our girls rose to the challenge and it was lovely for their work to be recognised in this way”.

While visiting the unit the Prof Carter made her own clay poppy which the Guides were making for the Remembrance Day services later in the month.
