A PIECE of public art at Winchester Cathedral has been fenced because it has become a danger in the sunshine.

Luminous motion is a metal light sculpture that has been heating up in hot sunny weather.

The cathedral has now fenced it off to stop people getting burnt.

A notice says: “The current extreme temperatures have resulted in this installation becoming very hot particularly when exposed to direct sunlight. As a precaution we have temporarily placed these barriers around it. Thank you for your understanding.”

The sculpture was erected in 2002 as part of the Winchester Light Art Project and it was unclear if there have been similar issues in the past 19 years.

It is an interactive work with passers-by able to sent text messages that alter the 500-light display.

The cathedral has been asked to comment.
