THIS week we take a look at Stanmore and what people were doing there all those years ago.
Winchester’s first council estate started in the 1920s saw the city centre ‘slums’ replaced with new houses – most of which still stand today.
They were built in Prime Minister David Lloyd George’s drive to provide soldiers returning from the Great War with ‘homes fit for heroes’
This meant more than just a good quality house; it meant that Britain would provide a higher standard of living for all.
These photos have been provided by the Hampshire Cultural Trust. The trust has access to the Hampshire Chronicle’s photo archives.
In future weeks, we will be running more black and white photos taken in Stanmore. We also plan to run similar features on Weeke, Winnall and Hyde.
