DASH-CAM footage captured by a driver travelling along the A33 this morning shows dozens of members of the traveller community lining the road.

The road was finally reopened late this morning after two days of disruption.

Police have attended an unauthorised horse and trap racing event along the road which goes between Basingstoke and Winchester this morning for the second day and were forced to close part of the road “as a safety precaution for drivers”.

This footage was captured by a member of the public at 7am this morning showing hundreds of people in attendance, with vehicles and horses lining the route.

Yesterday police seized three vehicles and arrested one person for drug driving.

A member of the public told the Gazette the racing began again this morning before 6.30am, with “tens of travellers with ponies” and police in attendance.

It was reported yesterday that around 200 people were taking part in the unauthorised event, blocking the carriageway, and disrupting traffic.

Despite this, police allowed the event to continue and the road closure was not lifted until around 4.30pm with police officers stood by for much of the day.

Winchester police posted an update on Twitter at around 11am this morning to say the road is now clear and has reopened, thanking the public for their “patience and support”.
