WHAT does Bear Grylls have in common with a former Winchester prisoner?

Both will be speaking at an Easter Service this year, set to be streamed in 37,000 cells across the country.

On Easter Day (April 4), the former inmate will tell his story of recovery whilst Mr Grylls, the famous adventurer, will give a message of hope.

The ex-prisoner, named only as Lewis, will perform spoken-word poetry on the theme of ‘I could have a thousand pounds in my pocket and steal a £10 shirt’.

A spokesperson for the Diocese of Winchester said: "As our country prepares to embrace even fewer Covid restrictions, over 50 HM Prisons will live stream what could herald a new dawn of Hope right into each cell.

"Bear Grylls will also give a message of hope talking about his own encounter with Jesus. He encourages us all to follow God’s calling this Easter for us all: love, love, love."

Other key figures from the church community will also join in, including Simon Ponsonby – one of the country’s leading speakers.

Reverend Craig Philbrick, Curate at Christ Church Winchester said: "Prisons are often side-stepped by the community – no one really knows what to do or how to help. This service is a great example of how we can support the prisoners and staff of HMP Winchester and we are so pleased to be able to share the real meaning of Easter."

The service will be available on the prison tv channel at 9am on Easter Day.
