The Worthys Boys Under 12s Team represented the club for the second year running at the George Parris International Seven-a-side Tournament held at West Ham United's Upton Park stadium recently.
This year the side were pitted against teams from Leigh (Essex), Rushingham (Peterborough) and Orpington in the group stage.
In the first match, the teamwork resulted in a well deserved 1-0 win over last year's beaten finalists, Leigh Ramblers, with Toby Sanders scoring the goal.
The second match against Rushingham saw Worthys go on to win the match 1-0 thanks once more to a strike from Toby Sanders.
In the third group match against Orpington, Worthys were not phased by their obvious quality and went 2-0 up within the first five minutes thanks to well worked team goals finished off again by Toby. Orpington came back hard and created several chances to score until our defence was broached for the first time with less than a minute left on the clock.
Going into the knockout stages as group winners was a fantastic achievement, supported by the fact that Worthys could only manage joint third in their group last year.
In the quarter-final Worthys played against Bealonians from Redbridge, Essex and were in trouble at 3-0 down well into the second half however the boys pulled it back to 3-2 with a matter of seconds to go thanks to goals from Sanders and Sam Bridge. Then came a moment of extreme calmness; Worthys were awarded a free kick just outside the box and instead of just blasting the ball with a direct shot at goal, the team worked out an excellent move that dumbfounded the Bealonians defence which enabled Alex Fyfe to score unopposed. This was literally the last kick of the game and sent the tie into a penalty shoot out.
Fate was again against the boys as they were beaten 3-2 and went out of the tournament in the same fashion as last year.
