DAME Anita Roddick, founder of The Body Shop, has recently agreed to become patron of local homelessness charity Emmaus Hampshire.
She said: "The great thing about this charity is that it provides much more than a warm place to stay. It gives the people who will live in the communities a very real sense of purpose because they are able to work for themselves and for others; to feel valued and needed."
Emmaus Hampshire aims to establish a "live/work" community development on the outskirts of Winchester. It will provide accommodation and jobs for 22 companions at any one time and will enable individuals to help themselves and others, and to work towards independent living, where possible.
Mrs Alison Thompson, chair of Emmaus Hampshire said: "We are so pleased that Dame Anita has agreed to become our patron. Her support means a great deal to all of us and is, I believe, going to be a wonderful boost for our work and our profile in the Hampshire area."
