SIR - Your correspondent Sir Andrew Lawson, QC, retired, comments on recent library issues, stating that in his opinion "it's not the label that matters, but the quality of the service", going on to suggest that "arrogance" is behind the librarians' fight for their professional status to continue to be recognised.
How misguided this person is. Librarians are not just fighting to retain their titles, but also their professional status and livelihood.
The library staff he meets with in the public areas are only part of a county wide organisation of library staff, working hard to contribute to the service he values.
This service has undergone considerable changes of late and will continue to do so.
Unfortunately, not all the changes or proposed changes will be for the best in my opinion.
The discovery' centre/cultural centre being constructed at the moment in Winchester is just the beginning, and it is being built on assumptions which display the arrogance of others to the detriment of the library service staff, budgets, and ultimately the public.
Library staff need all the support they can find at this time.
They have been asked not to speak directly to the press concerning such matters, but to refer any requests to the press office.
Support the librarians in their campaign, keep free speech and debate alive.
