SIR - We had hoped that Aldi would have abandoned their plans to build on the former Chimneys site and house No. 2 Burnett Close.

The planning committee unanimously rejected the previous plans, and Aldi's appeal was dismissed by the Government Inspector.

Aldi have now submitted a new planning application 07/01294/FUL, which can be inspected at the planning department, Civic Offices, Colebrook Street, or on the council's website: www.winchester.gov.uk.

It is vital that as many people as possible send a letter of objection to the planning department and councillors on the planning committee.

Last time objections from the local community did carry a lot of weight, and clearly affected the outcome.

I would encourage anyone who does not want an Aldi discount store on this site to write a letter of objection before June 28.

The Planning Inspector dismissed the appeal because the original application would be harmful to the character and appearance of the area, and the unacceptable visual impact of the extension of commercial/retail activities into the adjacent residential area.

He also commented that the site was not large enough to satisfactorily accommodate and resolve the competing demands.

Aldi's new application does nothing to resolve those findings.

The objection to the building of an Aldi store is not about it being a discount store, but the site being unsuitable.
