MAKE it look fit for a Queen - that was the task facing Romsey Abbey's dedicated team of flower arrangers as the countdown began to today's Royal visit.

Hundreds of flowers donated by Waitrose were delivered to the Abbey on Wednesday afternoon, along with a large quantity of foliage given by town florist Judy Webb.

In addition, there were several branches from churchwarden David Johnson's tree to add to the many shades of green.

And when the pink-tinged peonies and lilies and the cream roses went through the door, the Abbey's seven flower-arrangers were ready to begin their work.

It continued right through yesterday so they could move out in time for the Abbey choir to go in and put the final touches to its hymn-singing preparations for today's service.

The Queen is due to arrive at the Abbey at 10.30am today for a service to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the town receiving its royal charter. Following that she will unveil a plaque at the nearby charter stone; attend a reception at the Town Hall and planting a mulberry tree at Broadlands.
