YOUNGSTERS at Fair Oak Infant School at Eastleigh dressed up in their best for a garden party to celebrate a special day.

Last Thursday, June 7, the school officially opened its Children's World Garden and celebrated with drinks, food, games and music from the Wyvern Jazz Band.

Eastleigh's Mayor, Cllr Roger Smith, buried a time capsule in the £40,000 garden, with the help of pupils.

The capsule, the contents of which were chosen by pupils, included a copy of the Hampshire Chronicle, a school brochure, Ofsted reports, money, pencils and juggling balls.

Head teacher, Hazel Shaw, said: "We do a lot of international work in school, we have got the British Council International Schools award and the children just love learning about different countries.

"All of our classes are named after different countries."

The land was given to the school in 1998, with the original idea of creating a Millennium Garden. Various problems and delays meant it was not completed until this year and the theme was changed.

Children at the school all pitched in with ideas and the garden has four corners - Europe, Asia, America and Australia.

Pupils also submitted ideas for the name and voted on the final title for the garden.
