Southern Electric Premier League - Division 1.

St Cross Symondians (122-5) beat Hursley Park (121 all out).

Hursley Park are rooted to the bottom of the table after suffering a five-wicket defeat by St Cross Symondians in the Winchester basement derby.

A fifth successive defeat to their newly promoted city neighbours leaves Hursley with the only winless record in the log.

St Cross, in contrast, were delighted.

"It was the best we've bowled and fielded all season and against Hursley it all came together," enthused skipper Mark Padwick.

Giving Graham Noble the new ball provided an inspirational move by Padwick, who saw the former KES captain remove both Adrian Aymes and Chris Wheeler in a key new ball spell.

"He gave us a bit more control with the ball and finished with a creditable 3 for 10 in eight overs," Padwick said.

Raman Prendergast (17) tried to steady things but after his dismissal Jimmy Taylor (22) saw Paul Edwards and Ben Smyth fall cheaply and Hursley sink to 48 for 5.

Conscious of Park's threadbare batting resources, Taylor had to play a reserved innings and it wasn't until Scott Mills arrived at the crease to apply the long handle that Hursley's scoring rate increased to any great extent.

Mills (42) put bat to ball, but his departure - the first of a brace for Padwick (2-7) - effectively signaled the end for Hursley Park, who were dismissed for 121.

St Cross promptly lost New Zealander Sam Fairley to Hampshire's Billy Taylor (2-48), but James Irvine-Fortescue (26) and Ben Adams eased their reply to 40 without further mishap.

"We had a bit of a wobble at 48 for 3, but once we got to 60 it was downhill," Padwick said.

Teenager Jack Jenkins (31) played the key role, guiding St Cross towards their first success in Premier League cricket.
