A Winchester primary school said goodbye to their lollipop lady of 40 years.

Margaret Cole, who has lived near Stanmore Primary school since she first began in 1970, waved the children goodbye.

The 84-year-old said she took on the job when a local police officer visited her in person. She was paid roughly 30p per hour. She said her proudest moment was when she was awarded a MBE for services to the community in 1999 and that her daughter was so proud she cried when they visited Buckingham Palace.

In the 40 years she would have safeguarded around 4,000 children.

“It was for doing all my duties down the school, for my years to the community,” she said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my 40 years. I had a lovely tea party and we had the most beautiful cake.

“I had one and a half hours training when I started, that’s all! But now my eyesight is beginning to wane and it’s a shame really because that’s the only reason I’m retiring.”

Mrs Cole, of Green Jacket Close, Stanmore, said she’ll miss seeing the children every day and getting her daily exercise.

“I’ll miss just walking up and down Stanmore Lane and seeing my little darlings,” she added. “They have been fantastic and the little ones in push chairs always try to hold my hand. I’ve absolutely enjoyed it.”

The school head teacher, Justine Brooks, said: “The whole school community has really appreciated Mrs Cole taking care of so many children over the years. We will all really miss her and we wish her a long and happy retirement.”

The county council is looking for a replacement.
