VIBRANT green tights and old-school leg warmers were all the eyes could see at a 1970s-themed roller disco in Winchester this weekend.

The thunderous rolling of afro-wig-clad revellers skating around the track could be heard for miles when it came to the River Park Leisure Centre on Saturday.

Following the success of events in February and May this year, skaters from a bygone era were able to relive their youth and join in with the fast-moving conga lines when Tribe Festivals opened its doors to the public in the build up to the annual bonfire event on November 2.

Stefan Edwards and Josh Kinnersley started the disco after being inspired when they worked at Wychwood festival in Cheltenham a few years ago.

Now run by Tribe Festivals, the roller disco holds a whopping 200 people per session which has been taken to various other festivals across the country.

Stefan Edwards, operating manager, said: “The family sessions have proved really popular and we’re going to put a real focus on our next one in February based on today’s success. The great thing is that the parents love it and it’s seen as a real fitness event while still being entertaining for children.

“It’s a great way for children to get some real exercise-they come off the track and they’re just dripping so you know they’ve done some work!

“We've been going since the February before last and we moved to Winchester after we finished working for a festival in Cheltenham. We decided we wanted to do something else, something different,” he said. “Roller discos were big in the 70s and 80s but I think they had a bit of a lull in the 90s and now people seem to be interested again.”

Mum and son, Juliette and Jacob Green had a great time at the specialist young family session which saw scores of people skating their hearts away.

Juliette, 37, from Springvale Road in Kings Worthy, said: “We came here before and it’s just brilliant. It’s really well organised, with really good music. The stewards have been so quick to help when people fall over and everyone’s just having a good time.

“My son got some roller boots for his birthday because he’s so into it and now you can’t stop him!”
