CHILDREN in Winchester were taken back in time when the Anglo-Saxon exhibition came to the City Museum this weekend.

Parents and children enjoyed the recovered pottery and jewellery on display as well as trying on traditional Saxon costumes.

Members of the local re-enactment group, Weorod, were on hand, carrying on leatherwork and weaving, dressed in period costumes from the sixth and seventh centuries.

Artefacts included wall carvings found in parts of Winchester as well as pots used for burials in which pagan Anglo-Saxons would use to hold the ashes of the deceased.

The exhibition ran from November 1-2 proving to be quite popular during half term.

Visitor services team leader, Michael Nelles, said: “It’s been quite steady, boisterous and loud. It’s brought people out in droves and I think we’ve taken good advantage of the half term.”
