WORK on a new housing scheme in Winchester will start next month, city council leader Keith Wood announced yesterday. (WED) The former New Queen’s Head site in Stanmore will be demolished for 18-20 new council homes.
Cllr Wood said at Cabinet: “I can confirm that work to start development of over 100 new homes in the next two years is progressing well. The programme now focuses on three main developments: the New Queen’s Head, Victoria House in Hyde and the provision of a new 50-bed Extra Care Housing scheme.
“We are moving forward with our plans for developing the New Queen’s Head site. We have reviewed a range of options and are now working up plans to provide 18 to 20 new affordable homes for the benefit of Stanmore residents. In addition, significant improvements to open space and the access into Somers Close recreation ground will be incorporated.”
A planning application will be submitted early in 2014.
Cllr Wood added: “With regard to the Victoria House, detailed designs have been produced and an exhibition of the proposals for local members and residents is planned for November 11.
“Proposals for an Extra Care housing scheme in Winchester will be brought to the December Cabinet meeting.”
As previously reported, one suggested site for the Extra Care scheme has been the open air car park on Chesil Street.
