THE Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire helped Kings Worthy celebrate its history earlier this week.

Dame Mary Fagan unveiled a new plaque at Tubbs Hall, detailing the history of the road names on the Springvale Estate.

The estate was originally built to house Royal Navy families after World War Two and all the roads were named after naval commanders, including Admiral of the Fleet Sir Bruce Austin Fraser and Rear Admiral Robert St Vincent Sherbrooke.

Gloria Francis, of the Tenants and Leaseholders Association, who led the drive for the plaque, said: “One of our members Cecil Gilbert Wood BEM was a Royal Marine. He wanted some way of showing residents of the Springvale Estate why their roads were named after naval officers. “After his death three years ago the TLA took on the task to see it done. Today is a proud day for the Worthys and the Association.”

Dame Mary Fagan added “I am delighted to be here especially as Admiral Sherbrooke was my mother’s first cousin. Congratulations to all the residents. This is a very special idea and I hope others will follow it.”
