THE fear was that torrential rain would wash out hopes of success for the cake sale organised by the Mayor and mayoress of Winchester.
But the gazebos in Cathedral Close were only needed to keep the sun off the scores of cakes sold on behalf of Ernie and Barbara Jeffs.
Predicted for the morning, the rain held off all day.
A team of helpers from the Royal British Legion women’s section manned the stalls on Saturday.
The local barbershop choir, the Tudor Roses, serenaded the proceedings.
Cllr Jeffs said: “It has been a good day. We have been lucky with the weather. We have been busy all day and we hope to have made lots of money for our three charities.”
This year the mayoral charities are Hounds for Heroes, Network Scouts and the Countess Mountbatten Hospice.
