Three people were today fighting for their lives following a minibus crash on the M3 this morning.
The single-vehicle collision happened at 9.48am on the southbound carriageway between junctions 5 and 6 at Old Basing.
The three people, part of a group of nine Romanian nationals on holiday, were injured when the driver of the minibus lost control following a suspected blown tyre.
The minibus, which had been travelling in the fast lane, slewed across the carriageway and left the road where it overturned, throwing at least two passengers from the vehicle.
The northbound carriageway was initially closed to allow Helimed access to the scene. However air ambulances landed in a nearby field where the three seriously injured were flown to Southampton General Hospital where they remain in a life-threatening condition.
Seven other people – including two children – were walking wounded. They have been taken to Southampton General Hospital to be examined.
The northbound carriageway was swiftly reopened, however the southbound carriageway at junction 5 to 6 is expected to remain closed until approximately 4pm.
Motorists are asked to avoid the area where congestion has caused significant tailbacks. Diversions are in place at Junction 5 directing vehicles onto the A30.
Sgt Barry Long from Whitchurch Roads Policing Unit said: “We’re seeing significant congestion around the scene and would ask that people avoid this area.
“It’s a very hot day to be stuck in a car for long periods of time so we’d advise drivers to select an alternative route. If you cannot avoid the area, make sure you set out with water in your vehicle so you can stay hydrated during the wait.”
Police are appealing for anyone who saw the collision to contact Whitchurch Roads policing Unit on 101, quoting Operation Woodruff.
