THE University of Winchester is the safest for crime in the south east, according to new research.

It was ranked first for safety out of 17 universities in the region and the third safest in England and Wales, behind Aberystwyth and Durham.

Professor Elizabeth Stuart, deputy vice-chancellor, said: “We are delighted to hear the University of Winchester has been recognised as a safe university. The safety of our students is of paramount importance and we are proud to be located in an area which boasts low student-related crime rates.”

Compiled from police data, The Complete University Guide selected the three crimes most relevant to students - burglary, robbery and violent crime.

From May 2012 to April 2013 it looked at the annual reported incidents per thousand residents within wards or electoral divisions of which parts are within three miles of the main campus of a university. The overall ranking is based on the cumulative rate of all three crimes.
