THE Last Post once again sounded in Winchester on Saturday (July 13).
Veterans from the Royal Green Jackets visited their former home at Peninsula Barracks, Romsey Road, to pay tribute to fallen heroes.
It was part of an annual reunion with hundreds of veterans gathering at Sir John Moore Barracks at Littleton for a drumhead service later that day.
Past members of the regiment have been campaigning for a memorial at Peninsula Barracks, which is now housing.
Julie-Ann Rosser, one of the campaign leaders, said plans were progressing for a pair of memorial benches at the site.
She said: “We are getting more and more momentum for this exciting project, especially with the community covenant that was signed recently.”
Mrs Rosser, widow of Ian, who served at the barracks in 1984, added: “We wanted to sound the last post in memory of the Green Jackets and The Rifles. It's a show of support for our extended family at our ancestral home. You have your blood family but you also have this family that you joined and are with through thick and thin.”
Former Green Jacket Steve Barrett, who is also leading the charge for the memorial, said they hoped to erect the chairs in 2014.
