WINCHESTER is gearing up to signal the end of National Cycle Week in spectacular fashion.

A Cycle Fair will take over the city centre’s Broadway on Sunday (June 23) and families can bring their bikes along as the city centre is transformed into a hive of pedal-based activity.

The event is free and for people of all ages - from roller-racing to a mountain bike display, BMXs to a cycle treasure hunt and bike-decorating, there should be something for everyone, as long as you like bikes!

There is even talk of a comedy unicycling policeman.

It’s all part of CycleFest, a joint venture between Winchester City Council, British Cycling, Cycle Tours UK, Hampshire County Council and Winchester BID.

Winchester city councillor, Vicki Weston, said: “These two days of epic cycling action are for the 80,000 people who marked the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games across the district last year. We look forward to the people of Winchester turning out in their thousands to enjoy sport in the city once again.”

The fun and games will roll on from 12 noon to 4pm, but there’ll be more to follow in August, when a family cycle day will repeat the activities offered at the June event as part of the build up to the Winchester Criterium cycle race later that day.

A Criterium is a closed circuit race through the streets of the city centre where competitors repeat the same course as many times as they can within a set time limit.

Spectators are in for a sporting spectacle, as participants will reach speeds of about 30mph, starting and finishing at the Butter Cross in the High Street.

There will be races for men, women and juniors and each race will be capped between 30 and 40 riders.
