THE Mayor of Winchester Ernie Jeffs has officially opened the new tennis court and multi-use games facility at Oliver’s Battery Recreation ground and had a go at shooting a basket himself!
The parish council organised a barbeque and picnic and lots of crafts and sports activities for the community to celebrate the well-used £100,000 project which took 10 years to plan and fund. About 300 people attended the event on June 8.
Sara Outlaw, chairman of Oliver's Battery Parish Council, said: “Today is the culmination of a lot of hard work by the community and parish councillors to establish these excellent facilities for children and adults of all ages and it is wonderful to have so many people here today to share it.”
Oliver’s Battery Countryside Group also ran guided tours of the conservation area created seven years ago from a wilderness of brambles and nettles.
The wildlife area, surrounded by paddocks has wonderful open views of the countryside to the south and there is a feeling of peace and tranquillity enhanced by the sound of birdsong.
