POLICE are warning Winchester residents after an increase in shed and garage break-ins.

The Safer Neighbourhoods Team has recommended a number of safety measures after several incidents in Badger Farm, Stanmore and Oliver’s Battery.

PC Gareth McGaw said: “People do not often realise the value of the contents of their shed or garage until they have been the victim of crime and need to replace lawnmowers, bikes and tools.

“Please take a moment to review the security of your shed and garage and consider if there is anything you can do to make your property a less appealing target for thieves.”

The measures include:

  • Securing expensive items like lawnmowers and bikes to an anchor point,
  • Making sure garages and sheds have a good quality locks, (blob) Consider fitting a shed alarm,
  • Keep the structure in good repair,
  • Help police to identify the owner of recovered property by marking all items with your postcode and recording serial numbers. Details can also be registered for free on immobolise.com,
  • Ensure side gates are locked to prevent access to the rear of the property.

Anyone who sees anything suspicious should report it to the SNT on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
