A WINCHESTER golf club had a royal visit when at the start of a week of celebrations marking its 125th anniversary.
The Duke of York met members of the Royal Winchester Golf Club when he came to unveil a plaque to honour the milestone reached by the prestigious sporting club.
It is also 100 years since the club received its royal status.
Prince Andrew was accompanied by the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire's representative Brigadier David Harrison, and the Mayor and Mayoress of Winchester, Cllr Ernie Jeffs and his wife Barbara, as he toured the grounds.
Captain of the club, David Upton, and the Ladies' Captain, Jane Tandy, welcomed him to the Sarum Road venue before he was introduced to the members of the club committee.
It was Cllr Jeffs's first visit to the club saying the 100 year anniversary of the royal status was something else for Winchester to be proud of.
“We just shook hands at the door but he did a very good job at seeing the members and speaking to the committee members.
“I thought the club house was very nice. I thought it had a very good outlook,” he said.
