THE NEW Bishop of Winchester has been elected as the president of one of Hampshire's oldest youth hostels.

The board of the Winchester YMCA has agreed to have the Rt Rev Tim Dakin as its new president and take on a second vice president.

University of Winchester vice chancellor Professor Joy Carter is joined in her role by Shirley Steele who is the great great-grandaughter of the founder of the YMCA, Sir George Williams.

Mrs Steel has been a board member of the YMCA which is one of the oldest YMCA's in the world and founded in 1847.

The board has also appointed Neil Skinner as the new company secretary.

Richard Rogers, chairman of board of trustees said: “It is with great pleasure that we are able to announce these new appointments.

“We look forward to the spiritual leadership of Bishop Tim, the knowledge and understanding of the Vice Presidents and the expertise of Neil Skinner as we move forward into a new era of work for the young people of Winchester.”
