Romsey Scouts’ fund-raising efforts have reached new heights.

In the last 18 months, they have raised £12,000 to pay for a 20ft-high climbing wall at their Dr Peter Centre HQ, in Baden Powell Way.

“From the day after we took possession of the building, we have been working hard on turning our fantastic HQ into an active centre”, said District Commissioner, John Papworth.

Now the Scouts are hoping to raise a further £4,750 to add a traversing wall and buy climbing equipment. Donations have included £4,200 received from the Co-op, in The Hundred, Romsey, earlier this month.

Scouting stalwart, Jean Beauchamp, has been praised for her efforts, which have raised more than £1,000 for the wall. Her latest event was a jumble sale at the Dr Peter Centre on May 18 which raised £249.

It is hoped that the wall will be installed over the summer holidays and there are plans for an official opening sometime in the autumn. James Ketchel, Hampshire Scout Ambassador, hopes to be at the opening during a break in his round-the-world cycling tour. “This is a tremendous facility”, said Nigel Robertson, the project leaders. “It will be used not just by the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers of the whole of Romsey District. but Guides and Scouts from elsewhere.”
