CYCLING 200 miles in 24 hours sounds like a young man's game.
But 51-year-old Winchester resident Jon Ellis is ready for the challenge of the South Downs Double.
In June he will cycle the hilly South Downs Way to Eastbourne and back to raise money for Parkinson's UK, aiming to complete the nonstop ride in one day.
Only a handful of cyclists have done so and Jon is one of the oldest to attempt it, making him feel very nervous.
Jon, a management consultant, of West End Terrace, said: “It's a huge logistical challenge and fitness challenge. I'm doing it unsupported so I have to make sure I have enough food and the right kind, and I have to make sure my equipment is up to the job.
“Then there's the navigation. You would think the South Downs Way was well marked but it is easy to get lost, especially as I will be cycling in the dark and almost flying blind.”
He added: “It's a huge step into the unknown for me but I will finish it regardless of the time. If I finish in one piece and my bike doesn't break then I will be delighted.”
Jon's father Geoff, 78, has suffered from Parkinson's for years and Jon is aiming to raise £2,000 to help fight the disease.
