A WINCHESTER city councillor will not be taking part in his civic duties while he recovers at home following a double bypass procedure.

Kings Worthy representative Cllr Robert Johnston was taken to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Basingstoke before he underwent surgery at the Royal Brompton Hospital in London for “preventative” surgery.

The 72-year old said he had been complaining of breathlessness before he saw the doctor.

Winchester City Mayor Cllr Ernie Jeffs wished him a speedy recovery at his mayor making ceremony last week.

Speaking to the Hampshire Chronicle, Cllr Johnston said: “I can not speak highly enough for the staff at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital. Had they not found out what the problem was and rectified it in a speedy manner then this would have been a different phone call.”

The Liberal Democrat councillor is expected to be resuming council duties on June 18.
