WINCHESTER embraced a new fitness programme sweeping the country last weekend.
The city’s first 5km Parkrun took place at North Walls Recreation Ground on Saturday (April 27) with around 200 runners turning out.
It is part of a series of free events around the country organised by Parkrun UK.
Event director Tansy Gill, who lives in Winchester, said: “I think Winchester is missing an inclusive, free community event like this and hopefully this is an opportunity for people to exercise and make friends as it is a social activity as much as a sport.
“It can encourage people to have a healthy lifestyle. The whole point of this event is that it’s open to everyone and we are keen for all types of runners to come along and get involved.”
The event is supported by Winchester & District Athletics Club (WADAC) with many members out in force on Saturday.
Tansy added: “I’m really, really pleased with the turnout. This will take place every Saturday, regardless of the weather, and we hope to see this many in the future.”
The course involves three laps around River Park and is lead by a cyclist to ensure everyone goes in the right direction.
