ALFRED Hitchcock’s classic film of lies, lost ladies and locomotives is brought vividly to life at Theatre Royal Winchester in February in an ingenious stage adaptation which stars familiar faces from TV and radio.
The Lady Vanishes features Terry Molloy (The Archers, and Davros in 1980s Doctor Who) as enigmatic villain and Austrian brain surgeon, Dr Egon Hartz, and Clive Flint (The Execution of Gary Glitter, EastEnders) as the hilarious Charters.
This rollicking comedy thriller is set on a perilous journey across the Continent on the brink of total war. The original film was made in 1938 before Hitchcock emigrated to Hollywood and it tells the story of a collection of eccentrics trying to reach London on the Trans-Alpine Express. The plot takes as many twists and turns as the mountain railway which carries them.
The Lady Vanishes is adapted by Mark Simpson and draws from both the film and the novel about a young Englishwoman who tries to save Miss Froy, the governess and eponymous vanished lady, encountering a collection of eccentric characters along the way.
