THE A34 TRUNK ROAD AND THE M3 MOTORWAY

HIGHWAYS AGENCY
THE A34 TRUNK ROAD AND THE M3 MOTORWAY
M3 JUNCTION 9
TEMPORARY OVERNIGHT CLOSURES
Notice is hereby given that the Secretary of State for Transport intends to make an Order on the A34 Trunk Road and the M3 Motorway, in the County of Hampshire, under section 14(1)(a) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on the road.
The effect of the Order would be to authorise the overnight closure of the roundabout on the A34 at M3 Junction 9 north of Winchester, including the slip roads leading to and from both carriageways of the M3 at this junction. This would be in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake essential carriageway repairs and all associated work.
It is expected that the work would last for approximately 5 nights over a three month period starting on or after Monday 19 March 2012 between 22:00 and 05:30 on Monday - Thursday nights, 22:30 and 06:00 hours on Friday night, 22:00 and 06:00 hours on Saturday night and 22:30 and 05:30 on Sunday night.
The Order would come into force on 17 March 2012 and have a maximum duration of eighteen months. During the closures outlined above, traffic from the southbound A34 would be diverted at Three Maids Hill (A272), southeast on the B3420 (Andover Road) and east and southeast on the B3330 to join the M3 (or the A31) at Junction 10 (traffic from the A33 and Easton Lane would be diverted via the B3047 or Easton Lane and Wales Street to join this diversion route in Winchester); traffic from the A31 (and the Spitfire Link/B3330) wishing to join the northbound M3 would be diverted to join the southbound M3 at Junction 10 to Junction 11 (A3090) and return north on the M3 to Junction 9 (traffic from the Spitfire Link and the A31 for Winchester/A34 would be diverted east on the A31, west on the B3404 to Winchester and, if required, west on the B3330 and northwest on the B3420 to join the A34 at Three Maids Hill); traffic from the southbound M3 for the A31/Winchester would be diverted south on the M3 to Junction 11 and return north on the M3 to Junction 10; northbound traffic on the M3 for the A34/Easton Lane/A33 would be diverted north on the M3 to Junction 7 (A30), return south on the M3 to Junction 8, west on the A303 to Bullington Cross and, if required, south on the A34 to Three Maids Hill to join the diversion route above to Winchester and via the B3047 to the A33 or via Wales Street to Easton Lane.
The roundabout closure, slip road closures and diversion routes would be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works periods.
