RIVER ITCHEN WATER LEVEL MANAGEMENT PLAN

ANNOUNCEMENT OF INTENTION NOT TO PREPARE AN
ENVIRONMENTAL STATEMENT (REGULATION 5 OF THE
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT (LAND DRAINAGE
IMPROVEMENT WORKS) REGULATIONS 1999 AS AMENDED BY
SI 2005/1399 AND SI 2006/618
River Itchen Water Level Management Plan

The Environment Agency gives notice that it proposes to carry out improvement works this autumn/ winter on the River Itchen and Itchen Navigation at the following locations; near St Catherine’s Hill (SU 48290 27960), near Brambridge (SU 47300 22728), Twyford (SU 47690 25665) and The Malms (SU 47125 23809).
The proposed improvement works involve building new structures, repairing, and in some places replacing, collapsing flood control structures (such as culverts) to ensure their long term security of operation for flood defence purposes. Once in place the structures will be operated to control water levels in the water meadow carriers in order to manage flooding more appropriately to improve the ecological condition of the River Itchen Site of Special Scientific Interest.
Construction is anticipated to start the end of October and be finished by the end of January 2012.
The Environment Agency and Natural England consider that the improvement works will not have significant negative effects on the environment and does not intend to prepare an environmental statement in respect of them. The Environment Agency considers the project to be a low risk to the environment and have voluntarily undertaken a fit for purpose Environmental Impact Assessment in accordance with current best practice procedures. The EIA documents are available on request from the Project Manager.
Any person wishing to make representations in relation to the likely environmental effects of the proposed improvement works should do so, in writing, to the address specified below, within 28 days of the date of publication of this notice.
