PLANS have been submitted to Winchester City Council to replace the railings on St Paul’s Bridge.
As previously reported, Network Rail applied for planning permission to replace the fencing which was erected in 2020 following a death from the bridge by Upper High Street.
The new application seeks to make amendments to the design of the development to address design issues with the fencing.
The planning statement, submitted to Winchester City Council by AECOM on behalf of Network Rail, says: “The aim of the proposed works is to replace the existing fencing on the bridge and along parts of the adjoining highways (Clifton Terrace and Station Road) with railings. The railings need to continue reducing the risk of trespassing onto the operational railway whilst better reflecting the character and appearance of the conservation area.

“The proposed works will involve the removal of the existing anti-trespass fencing and the installation of new heritage-style railings.
“The railings to be installed will be 1.5m high from the top of the bridge parapet and approximately 2.5m high from the footpath. The railings consist of 'T' shaped posts at 2m intervals. The posts extend most of the way down the existing parapet wall and will be fixed using suitable resin anchors. Between each of the posts will be metal railings. The new railings and vertical posts are to be painted in Jet Black RAL 9005 (30 per cent gloss).”
