WINCHESTER'S upcoming Nando's wants to serve alcohol into the late evening.

The former Debenhams unit in High Street, empty since 2021, is currently being converted into the popular chicken restaurant and burger establishment Five Guys.

Nando's Chickenland Limited, the company that operates the chain, has applied to Winchester City Council to serve 'late night refreshment' seven days a week from 11pm to 12am.

They also want to sell alcohol, for consumption both on and off the premises, seven days a week from 11am to 12am.

An opening date is currently unknown.

Signs were recently put in the windows advertising the restaurant chain on the right-hand side of Debenhams, near to St Maurice’s Covert.

Three planning applications, submitted to Winchester City Council by Firstplan, confirmed that Five Guys and Nando’s will be moving into the space.

The applications are regarding external alterations and signage.

According to plans, the art-deco windows located directly below the Debenhams signage will be retained.

The planning statements say: “The application proposals seek to make minor alterations and the associated signage to the unit to facilitate the occupation of the unit by its ingoing operator(s).”

People can comment on the proposals until May 29 by emailing the city council licencing department by emailing licensing@winchester.gov.uk.
